This tour starts on a big hill and from there it's mostly downhill; we'll walk a steep downhill for three blocks and a slight uphill for two blocks near the middle of the tour. (Don't worry about climbing this big hill again because the tour ends in a different neighborhood).
Do we walk the whole time?
The tour is about half walking and half talking. We stop, discuss a building, person, or historical event, then move to the next stop. There are about 18 stops on this tour.
Does the tour end where we start?
No, the tour ends in North Beach, about 10 blocks from where we begin. We feel we can show more of the City by ending in a different area. Plus, we don't want you to have to walk up any hills more than once!

FUN FLASHBACK FACTS
Flashback examines the rise and fall of the Haight-Ashbury hippie culture. Starting in 1964 as a utopian ideal of peace, love, and flower children, the dream was virtually over by 1968 when the streets filled to capacity and the trip turned bad, man. Really bad.
We see the locations of some of the most memorable events of the tie-dyed Summer of Love, as well as the former homes of the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, and other notable characters. The tour also discusses the music, poster art, and lifestyles that defined the Hippie era in San Francisco’s most colorful neighborhood.
We’ll also cover the role of the Diggers, a group of activists who organized “happenings,” opened soup kitchens, and operated “free stores” in the Haight. (How were they able to give so many away free goods? Volume.)
Flashback explores a neighborhood that avoided the Great Fire of 1906, so you’ll see some old Victorian homes, as well as some of today’s colorful characters—we recommend packing a camera.

Learn about the ever-changing history of North Beach, from the Gold Rush debauchery of the Barbary Coast era to the anti-establishment artists of the 1950s to the present. North Beach is always changing, and this has encouraged many locals to reinvent themselves over the years, too. Walking on Water explores San Francisco's original shoreline and how this sleepy village became a boom town that doubled in population every 10 days during the height of the Gold Rush. Adventurers from every corner of the planet came to strike it rich, abandoning hundreds of ships in the bay to race to the gold fields. This is what gave birth to bay's shipping industry, which is just as strong 150+ years later.
